Topic: Aspirations and concerns of a Singaporean Youth.( what crap am i writing???)

People often spoke strongly about how the Singapore society allows Singapore youth to pursuing their dreams where their passion, dream and aspirations are allowed to showcase. However, it was not surprising to find us youth in Singapore complaining rather than appreciative living in such an environment. This is especially so when the issues are about academic qualifications and material success, where one success in Singapore is solely built on academic qualification factor.

Thus youth in Singapore lacked the desire to pursue his passion as they would have to compromise between their education and their passion. Theoretical it was know that Singaporean youth could juggle between getting an education and pursuing their interest. However this in term creates Singaporean youth who neither excel in education or their field of interest.

Even for the education system in Singapore, youth who are in primary school have to strive for the EM1 stream as they are group into different stream. For people who are group into EM3 does the education system totally condemn them in this way as most of their futures are destroyed by this totally comprises their childhood between the education systems. This education system even denied the non-academically inclined student to reach their potential or even provide a second chance for student who either fail or make mistake in the process. For example, in the case of secondary school where student like me who failed their English but yet passed other subjects with acceptable result was denied the chance of continuing as an express stream student and have to be demoted to normal stream thus wasting one more year in the secondary school life.

Although with such flaw in our education system, our educational system is still consider as one of the best in the world surpassing most nations with comparable economies and education system. It was even label with Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea one of the four Asian Tigers. Even educators and policy makers in the United States of America wanted to emulate the education system of Singapore.

However, the education system creates most of the youth in Singapore to be self-centered, unconcern, selfish who cared only for themselves. For example, schools that introduce the Community Involvement Programme (CIP) without even letting the student understand the objective of the CIP in schools where character development form the main focus. Singapore youth only engage in such activities only for the sake of meeting the CIP quota thus this make the voluntary work done by the student to be totally meaningless as it does not reflect on their own self. I would suggest that schools should let student suggest their own CIP activities instead of solely relying on activities that the schools provided so that the Community Involvement Programme will integrate into the student daily lives.

Next as a Singapore youth, I too felt that our culture and the policies in Singapore totally denied us the opportunities to venture into the local market let alone abroad. Secondly, issues were even raised among the youth that more support was required in the facilities for sport or even arts. Although with the constructing of the esplanade in Singapore, the youth park or even the skater park, one would hope that it would bring arts or extreme sports more accessible to the youth where nurture talent could be nurture in the process. However it was not in the case for Singapore society instead it further widens the gap between the youth and the art or extreme sport.

On the other hand, I greatly appreciate the effort of the government in promoting arts and extreme sport among the youth in Singapore where it enable them to pursue their interest outside of their academic workload.

Although our society is not prefect in the sense that youth are actually able to pursues their interest without neglecting their academic result but as a Singaporean youths we should try to understand how fortunate we are to be able to live in Singapore where everything is being provided and taken care of by the government without even worried about natural disaster as Singapore are strategically located on the globe.

From my point of view although Singapore society allows Singapore youth to pursue their passion dream and aspirations, however sacrifice between dream and academic qualifications would have to be make by one individual.
